Guide dog has given ex-footballer his life back
01 Mar 2017
Dave Thomas, spent the best part of two decades bringing joy to football fans across the country playing for top teams and England at the height of his career. His life changed dramatically sixteen years ago, when sight loss robbed him of his freedom and independence, to the point that he was scared to leave the house on his own.
Dave, who’s lived with Glaucoma since 2001, applied for a guide dog and in early January and was matched with Hannah. Already Hannah has transformed his life and he has his love for life back.
When you get Dave talking, it is hard to stop him and he had this to say,
“The independence having a dog has given me has transformed my life. Now I have Hannah I am able to go on the bus, go into my local town, Barnard Castle, under my own steam, go to the doctors to get my prescription, my eye drops. It’s like a dream.”
Over the past 15 months, Dave has been raising money for Guide Dogs and has been overwhelmed by the donations from his former clubs and fans. He is planning on visiting two of his former clubs in 2017 to say thank you for their help in his fundraising efforts.
